Succession certificate documents checklist
Banks and other institutions usually ask for a succession certificate before releasing a deceased person’s deposits, savings certificates or shares. Gathering these documents first makes the application to the District Judge’s court much smoother.

About the deceased
- ☐ Death certificate issued through the birth and death registration system.
- ☐ The deceased’s NID, passport or birth certificate.
- ☐ Proof of the deceased’s ordinary residence at the time of death, which decides which District Judge’s court has jurisdiction.
- ☐ Religion of the deceased, which determines the inheritance rules applied.
About the heirs
- ☐ Warish certificate (ওয়ারিশ সনদ) from the Union Parishad, Pourashava or City Corporation.
- ☐ NID or birth certificate of every heir, including minors.
- ☐ Relationship proof: kabinnama for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and other records for more distant heirs.
- ☐ Current addresses of all heirs, since the court issues notice to them.
- ☐ Consent or no-objection affidavits from other heirs where they support the application.
- ☐ Details of any heir who has died since the death, with their own heirs listed.
Debts and securities to be covered
- ☐ Bank name, branch and account numbers, with recent statements or balance certificates.
- ☐ Fixed deposits, DPS, savings certificates (sanchayapatra) and bonds, with certificate numbers and values.
- ☐ Shares, BO account details and dividend records.
- ☐ Insurance, provident fund, gratuity or other dues where the paying body asks for a certificate.
- ☐ Money owed to the deceased by others, with supporting documents.
- ☐ A schedule listing each item and its value, which is used for the court fee calculation.
Application papers and court requirements
- ☐ A petition under the Succession Act 1925 stating the date and place of death, the heirs, the applicant’s right and the debts and securities claimed, signed and verified.
- ☐ Supporting affidavit where required.
- ☐ Ad valorem court fee on the value of the debts and securities, calculated under the current Court-fees Act schedule.
- ☐ Vakalatnama if a lawyer files the application.
- ☐ Costs for notice to heirs and any newspaper publication the court directs.
- ☐ Security bond, if the court asks the applicant to give security.
If an heir lives abroad or is a minor
- ☐ A power of attorney executed before the Bangladesh mission and processed in Bangladesh, if the heir cannot attend.
- ☐ Guardian details for a minor heir and whether a guardianship order is needed for the minor’s share.
- ☐ Contact details and passports of overseas heirs for notice and verification.
