FIR, Complaint Case & GD
Whether you need to start a criminal case or you have just found one started against you, the opening document decides a great deal. We draft and lodge FIRs and complaint cases, and we act for those who have been named in one.
How to file a GD, FIR or complaint case
A criminal case usually begins in one of two ways: an FIR recorded at the police station, or a complaint case filed directly before the magistrate. A General Diary entry records a matter without starting a prosecution. We advise which route fits, draft the document, and act on either side of it.
FIR and General Diary
An FIR sets the police investigation in motion. What it says, and what it leaves out, shapes the investigation and the charge sheet. Where the police will not record an FIR, or the matter is not yet an offence, a GD or a complaint before the magistrate may be the right step.
Complaint cases
Where the police will not act, or the offence is one a magistrate can take cognisance of directly, a complaint case is filed before the magistrate, who may examine the complainant and order inquiry or process. We prepare and conduct these.
If you have been named
Being named in an FIR is not a conviction, and much can be done early: representation during the investigation, protection against arrest, and, where a case is false or an abuse of process, an application to the High Court Division to quash it.
What helps
- A clear, dated account of what happened
- Names and addresses of those involved and of witnesses
- Documents, messages, photographs or medical records
- Any earlier GD, complaint or correspondence
- For an accused, the FIR copy and the sections alleged
Where it is dealt with, and how long
An FIR is lodged at the police station with jurisdiction; a complaint case is filed before the Magistrate. Lodging is quick. What follows, investigation and charge sheet, or inquiry and process, runs over months. Quashing applications go to the High Court Division.
Work out the right route
We decide between an FIR, a complaint case, a GD, or a civil remedy.
Draft it properly
We draft the FIR or complaint so the facts and offences are stated accurately and completely.
Lodge and follow it
We lodge it and stay with the investigation rather than leaving it to drift.
Defend or challenge
For an accused, we act during investigation and, where a case is an abuse, move to quash it.

Common questions
The police will not take my FIR. What now?
You are not stuck. A complaint case can be filed before the magistrate, and there are steps to compel or bypass an unwilling police station. Bring us the facts and we will pick the route.
A false case has been filed against me. Can it be stopped?
Where a case is false or an abuse of the process, an application to the High Court Division to quash it is available. Meanwhile we deal with protection from arrest and representation in the investigation.
What is the difference between a GD and an FIR?
A General Diary simply records information. An FIR starts a criminal investigation into a cognisable offence. Which is appropriate depends on what has happened, and getting it wrong wastes time.
How do I file a GD online?
Use Bangladesh Police’s Online GD service (website or app): register with your NID and mobile number, choose the police station and describe the matter. You get a GD number to track it. Some matters still need a visit to the police station; our GD guide explains which.
Does filing a GD or a case at the police station cost money?
No. There is no fee to lodge a GD or an FIR. If anyone asks for money, note the name and complain to the officer-in-charge or the Superintendent of Police.
Will the police investigate a GD?
A GD about a non-cognizable offence can be investigated only with a Magistrate’s permission (s.155 CrPC). If the facts disclose a cognizable offence, insist that it is recorded as an FIR. A GD for a lost item or a threat is mainly a record, though police may enquire.
Start, or answer, a criminal case properly
The opening document decides more than people expect. A written assessment costs nothing.
