Power of attorney from abroad, drafted for Bangladesh
A power of attorney signed abroad is the document that lets someone in Bangladesh sell or manage your land, run your case or deal with a bank for you. Small errors in the wording or the formalities mean it is rejected at the registry or the court. We draft it in the Bangladesh format, tell you exactly how to sign it where you live, and handle the steps once it arrives.
What we handle for clients abroad
Choosing the right kind of power
A special power of attorney covers one task, such as selling one plot or running one case. A general power covers a range of acts, such as managing property and dealing with offices. An irrevocable power under the Power of Attorney Act 2012 is used for sale, mortgage or land development in return for consideration, and must be registered. We advise which one fits your task, and keep the powers no wider than they need to be.
Drafting in the Bangladesh format
We prepare the deed in Bangla or in bilingual form, following the prescribed form, with the full property schedule (mouza, JL number, khatian, dag and area), the acts allowed, the term, and the details of both parties. Most embassies expect the document to arrive ready to sign, and a draft prepared in Bangladesh is far less likely to be rejected later.
Signing where you live: embassy or apostille
There are two usual routes. You can sign in person before the consular officer at the Bangladesh embassy, high commission or consulate, with photographs and identity documents of both parties. Or, since Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention in force from 30 March 2025, you can in many countries sign before a local notary and have the document apostilled by that country’s authority. Which route is safer depends on the country and on how the power will be used, and we tell you before you book anything.
What changed in 2025
Amendments to the Power of Attorney Rules 2015, published in February 2025, allow a person abroad to execute a power using a national ID card or birth certificate, or a foreign passport with a No Visa Required endorsement, instead of only a Bangladesh passport. An authenticated power must now be sent to Bangladesh within six months of authentication.
Once it reaches Bangladesh
A power signed abroad has to be authenticated and stamped in Bangladesh within fixed time limits, and a power for land must also be registered at the Sub-Registry. Stamping is generally due within three months of the document first arriving, and registration within four months. We receive the original, take it through each office, and send you the registered copy.
Checking, using and cancelling a power
We review powers you have already given or been asked to sign, brief your attorney on the limits, and prepare and register a revocation when you want to end one, with notice to the Sub-Registrar, banks and anyone else who may deal with the attorney.

Timelines and costs
Drafting usually takes two to four working days once we have the details. Embassy appointments and courier time vary by country, typically one to four weeks. The Bangladesh-side steps take a few weeks more. Our fee is fixed for drafting and for each Bangladesh step. Embassy fees, stamp duty and registration fees are separate and receipted.

Common questions
How do I make a power of attorney from abroad for Bangladesh?
Have it drafted in the Bangladesh format, sign it at the Bangladesh mission or before a local notary with an apostille where accepted, and send the original to Bangladesh. It is then authenticated, stamped and, if it concerns land, registered.
Can I use an apostille instead of going to the embassy?
Often yes. Bangladesh has been part of the Apostille Convention since 30 March 2025. A few countries have objected to Bangladesh’s accession, and some offices are still more familiar with embassy-attested powers, so we check your country and purpose first.
Do I need a Bangladesh passport to give a power of attorney?
Not any more. Since the February 2025 amendment to the Rules, a national ID card, a birth certificate, or a foreign passport with a No Visa Required endorsement can be used.
How long is a power of attorney signed abroad valid in Bangladesh?
It stays valid for the term it states, unless revoked. The time limits apply to the formalities: it must be sent within six months of authentication, and stamping and registration in Bangladesh have their own deadlines, so do not keep it in a drawer.
Is registration of a power of attorney compulsory?
It is compulsory for irrevocable powers, which include powers to sell, mortgage or develop land. Land offices and banks usually ask for a registered power in any case.
Can I cancel a power of attorney from abroad?
Yes. A general power can be revoked with notice to the attorney. If it was registered, we prepare and register a revocation deed and notify the Sub-Registrar and others who may deal with the attorney.
Company registration, investment, tax and business compliance for non-residents are handled by our associate firm LegalDesk.bd.
