Name Correction in Bangladesh: NID, Birth Certificate, Education Certificates and Passport
A name spelled one way on the NID, another on the SSC certificate and a third on the land deed can block a passport, a bank account, a job or an inheritance. Each record has its own office and process. This guide explains them, the documents each one wants, and the order that saves the most time.
- Fix the record your other documents rely on first, usually the SSC certificate or birth registration
- NID corrections are applied for online and decided by election officials by category
- Birth registration corrections go to the local registrar through the online system
- An affidavit supports a correction; a full name change also needs a newspaper notice
In this guide: Which record to correct first · NID name correction · Birth registration correction · SSC, HSC and other certificates · Affidavit, newspaper notice, land records and deeds
The short answer
There is no single office for name correction. The NID is corrected online through the Election Commission’s NID service, birth registration through the online birth registration system and your local registrar, education certificates through the education board, and passports through the Department of Immigration and Passports, which follows the NID. Gather documents that show the correct name, swear an affidavit if the error is significant, and correct the records in order, starting with the one the others rely on.
Which record to correct first
Offices check new applications against older records. A practical order is:
- SSC or equivalent certificate (for those who have one), since it is the strongest proof of name and age.
- Birth registration, so it matches the certificate.
- NID, using the certificate and birth registration as evidence.
- Passport, bank, TIN and job records, which follow the NID.
- Land records and deeds, which often need separate steps.
NID name correction
- Where: online through the NID service portal or the NID Wallet app, after verifying your face and phone number.
- Documents: SSC or other exam certificate, birth registration, passport, and if relevant the parents’ NIDs or a nikahnama. More documents improve the chance of approval.
- Who decides: since July 2026, applications are handled by election officials at upazila, district and regional level according to the category of change; the most serious category is decided centrally.
- Fee: paid online when you apply. The fee is shown during the application and is higher for repeat corrections.
- Tip: a hearing may be called. Bring originals of everything you uploaded.
Birth registration correction
Apply through the online birth and death registration system, then submit the printed application with supporting documents to the registrar office where the birth was registered (union parishad, municipality or city corporation). The registrar can correct a spelling or detail when the evidence supports it. Corrections to date of birth face closer scrutiny. Keep the application number to track progress.
SSC, HSC and other certificates
Certificate errors are corrected by the relevant education board, usually through the school or college. Boards normally want the original certificate and marksheet, the registration card, birth registration, and an affidavit. A full change of name (not just spelling) usually also needs a newspaper notice. Board committees decide; it can take several months, so start early.
Affidavit, newspaper notice, land records and deeds
- Affidavit: a sworn statement before a notary public or magistrate that both names refer to the same person. Used as supporting evidence for every office above.
- Newspaper notice: required for a change of name, for example after marriage or conversion, and often asked for by boards and the passport office.
- Land records: a wrong name in the khatian is corrected by the AC Land or, after final publication, through the Land Survey Tribunal.
- Deeds: a mistake in a registered deed is fixed by a registered rectification deed signed by the same parties.
